Jaidev and his unforgettable music

By Dr Amjad Parvez

It was in 1963 that the song Raat Bhi Hei Kutch Bheegi Bheegi kept haunting this scribe for a long time when Sunil Dutt-Waheeda Rehman starrer movie Mujhe Jeeney Do was released. Apart from the dance pictured by Waheeda Rehman on this song, the music was enchanting. It had another beautiful song Terey Bachpan Ko Jawani Ki Dua Daiti Hun based on the story of a bandit who has a child from Waheeda Rehman and fearing that their child might follow his father’s footsteps, she is skeptical while praying for his long life. Shot in , Madhya Pradesh, and Mohan Studios, Bombay, this movie went on to become the eighth , and Official selection at the . The movie was also the first success of actor Sunil Dutt’s production banner, Ajanta Arts, who chose to take the risk of releasing it along with two other big films in the same year, Dilip Kumar’s Ganga Jamuna and Raj Kapoor’s Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hei. The music for the movie was provided by Jaidev though he had already composed music for the movie Joru Ka Bhai in 1955, Samundri Daku in 1956, Anjali in 1957 and Hum Dono in 1961, the latter being huge success.

The movie Hum Dono brought Jaidev into limelight as a gifted music composer. The movie had a strong plot and equally strong music. Probably the two songs with religious connotations Allah Tero Naam and Prabhoo Tero Naam by Lata Mangeshkar are among the best ones ever produced by Hindi screen. A duet by Asha and Rafi Abhi Na Jaao Chore Kar Abhi To Dil Bhara Nahin is an evergreen hit, equally popular today as it was then. That is why Lata Mangeshkar considered Jaidev among her favourites besides Salil Chaudhry and Madan Mohan.

Jaidev was born in Nairobi, Kenya on August 03, 1919 and brought up in Ludhiana, India. In 1933, when he was just fifteen, he ran away to Bombay with the dream of becoming a film star, and ended up acting in eight films of the Wadia Film Company as a child star. Professor Barkat Rai introduced Jaidev to music at a very young. Unfortunately, Jaidev’s film career came to a sudden halt when he had to go back to Ludhiana due to his father’s illness, and thus the entire responsibility of the family fell upon Jaidev’s shoulders. After his father passed away, Jaidev looked after his family dutifully and took care of everything.

Jaidev started his music career, with his initial teachers being Krishnarao Jaokar and Janardan Jaokar. Ustad took Jaidev as his music assistant in 1951, when he composed music for Navketan’s Aandhiyan and Hum Safar. After working for the film Taxi Driver, Jaidev started assisting music composer S D Burman. He created some memorable melodies like Talat-Lata solo Jaein To Jaein Kahan. Jaidev also assisted S D Burman in the movies Chalti Ka Naam Gaari and Lajwanti. His big break as a full-fledged music director came with Chetan Anand’s film, Joru Ka Bhai, followed by Chetan Anand’s next film Anjali; both of these films became very popular. Two songs by Muhammad Rafi from this movie are the evergreen songs, namely Kabhi Khud Pey Kabhi Halaat Pei Rona Aaya and Mein Zindigi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya.

Many other movies for which Jaidev composed memorable music are Reshma Aur Shera (1971), Sampoorn Dev Darshan (1971), Bharat Darshan (1972), Bhaavna (1972), Maan Jaiye (1972), Prem Parvat (1973), Aalingan (1974), Parinay (1974), Ek Hans Ka Joda (1975), Faasla (1976), Aandolan (1977) and Alaap (1977). These movies were followed by others like Tumhare Liye in 1978 and Sharmila Tegore-Uttam Kumar starrer Dooriyan in 1979.

Jaidev’s song Seeney Mein Jalan Seeney Mein Toofan Sa Kyun Hei from Gaman attracted the sonic appeal. Jaidev got a National Film Award for his musical compositions. He received two other National Film Awards for the movies Reshma Aur Shera in 1972 and Ankahee in 1985. Some other awards he bagged were Sur Singhar Award (four times) and Lata Mangeshkar Madhya Pardesh Government Award.

Jaidev composed music for some more movies like Solvan Saawan (1979), Aai Teri Yaad (1980), Ek Gunaah Aur Sahi (1980), Wohi Baat (1981), Raam Nagri (1982), Ek Naya Itihaas (1983), Ankahee (1984), Jumbish (1986), Trikon Ka Chautha Kon (1986), Amarjyoti, Azaadi Pachchis Baras Ki, Atish and Shadi Kar Lo. However if we do not mention the movie Reshman Aur Shera in which Jaidev produced excellent music, this capitulation would not be substantive. The film won music director, , his first in 1972.

Jaidev died on January 06, 1987 but is remembered for his melodies even after his demise. He was always selective in picking up movies for which he was asked to compose music. Though many of Jaidev’s films failed at the box office, many of them, such as Alap, Kinare Kinare and Ankahee, are remembered for his imaginative musical scores. He had a unique capability to mix traditional and folk music into Bollywood film situations, which gave him a unique advantage over other music directors of his time.
